Who Wants a Quiz Today ?
by Lucas J. Mather, TRP
Professor: Who wants a quiz today? We’ll vote.
Students: [tired, grumpity, worried, waiting to vote no].
Professor: Ok, here we go: so whoever wants to vote “yes” on taking a quiz today, sit-there-and-look-bored.
[3 second pause, professor glances around the room quickly].
Professor: wow, unanimous. Amazing. So rare for a democracy.
[Professor turns around, begins writing the 5 minute quiz question on the board].
Students : [groans, wimpers, w-t-f’s, grumblings–but, one guy and two pretty girls are smiling, confident, happy , and these 3 catch the sympathetic eye of the professor].
Professor: I see a few outliers, the few who aren’t bored and thus who voted no on this quiz. Democracies, with their majority rule, tend to trample upon discrete and insular minorities.
